Hajar, Tétouan, and her first publication on rockrose

A LinkedIn message from a Master's student in Tétouan who wants to re-enter 30 Cistus ladanifer measurements in PhytoNote after her internship. Four hours later, her first paper was submittable.

The message reached me on a Sunday evening, on LinkedIn. Hajar, a Master's student at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University in Tétouan, had just wrapped up her end-of-study internship. Six months on the essential oil of Cistus ladanifer harvested in the Rif. GC-MS profiling, antibacterial activity against four strains. Her supervisor was encouraging her to publish in open access in the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry. She wrote with the careful politeness of students who doubt themselves: "Madame, I would love to use your app but my internship is already over. Can I re-enter my 30 measurements into it to get a clean export for the paper?"

She had found PhytoNote through my outreach article published on this site in February. I did not reply right away. I wanted to read the message a second time, because it carried more than what it explicitly asked.

What the numbers were hiding

Thirty measurements is both little and a lot. Eighteen GC-MS analyses for the chemical profile, twelve minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis. For a Master's student in Morocco, on a six-month placement with probably shared GC-MS access, that counts as a respectable workload.

The real problem was hidden behind those numbers. Her raw data sat scattered across one lab notebook, two unversioned Excel files, and a USB stick she had lost and found twice during the placement. The GC-MS profile was somewhere on the lab machine. The MIC values had been typed into a spreadsheet where the "standard used" column was filled in two days after the runs, from memory. Nothing scandalous. It is the everyday reality of many interns, and it is also why they are afraid to publish.

My reply

I wrote back the next morning, in a few lines. "Yes, you can re-enter your data into PhytoNote. But do it for your provenance — do it now, before the vials get thrown out and the PhD student at the lab finishes her thesis and moves to another city."

That sentence was what decided her. Not the idea of a clean export, but the concrete prospect that material evidence was about to disappear. The standard vials you toss at the end of a project feel invisible when you are inside it, and they are final once you are out. I lived the vanished-vial scenario myself during a Journal of Ethnopharmacology review in 2025 — I made it into the reviewer and post-it story.

Four hours of re-entry

Hajar spent a whole Saturday afternoon on it. She sent me screenshots as she went. First the vials: ladanifer cistus essential oil, lots, extraction dates, method (Clevenger hydrodistillation, 3 hours). Then the standards: gentamicin as positive control for the Gram-negatives, vancomycin for S. aureus, DMSO as negative control. Then the GC-MS measurements, one by one, by re-reading the notebook. Then the MIC plates, plate by plate, with concentrations in µL/mL and the inhibition zones.

At measurement number 24, she stopped. The antibiotic standard used for two of the MIC plates did not appear anywhere in her notes. Not the name, not the lot. She remembered there had been a vial change midway through the placement because the previous one had expired. But which one? When?

She wrote to me, panicked in her own way — that is to say politely, apologising for the disturbance. I told her: "Call your supervisor. And check whether the PhD student at the lab, the one who shared the bench, did not note something in her own notebook."

The supervisor found the number in the PhD student's notebook, which logged all antibiotic deliveries for the shared lab. Hajar completed her two entries. The rest of the re-entry took another two hours. Four hours total, to turn honest chaos into an exportable dataset.

The fear of publishing

Hajar was afraid. Not afraid of rejection, afraid of judgement. First publication, first time a name gets handed to anonymous reviewers who can cut a piece of work to pieces in a few lines. In Morocco as anywhere else, Master's students experience publishing as a leap into the void, especially when university supervision has not trained them to read reviewer reports.

What I told her, across several exchanges, came down to a few simple ideas. Her data was worth publishing because it was specific: Cistus ladanifer from the Rif is not the same essential oil as the one from southern Spain or Portugal, and the chemical profile combined with the MIC values added something to the literature. The Moroccan Journal of Chemistry is not a predatory journal, it is a serious Maghrebi journal, indexed, that accepts well-done Master's work. Her supervisor was walking with her, she was not alone against the world.

And above all, I told her that re-entering her data in PhytoNote was not only about producing a pretty table for the manuscript. It was about rebuilding traceability before it became unrecoverable. That distinction landed only after she called her supervisor.

March, submission. May, acceptance.

The manuscript was submitted on 14 March 2026. Accepted with minor revisions on 9 May. Three reviewer comments: one asking for clarification on the MIC method (the serial dilution was not explicitly detailed), one asking for a reference on the chemical profile of Portuguese cistus for comparison, and one minor remark on reference formatting. Not a word about standard traceability.

Hajar sent me a message on the day of acceptance. Three lines, one with a discreet emoji. She thanked me. I wrote back that I had not done much. She had done six months in the lab and four hours of re-entry. That was true. But I also know that the single message "can I re-enter my 30 measurements" had cost her a dose of courage that established researchers tend to underestimate.

PhytoNote is not only for big labs

I am writing this episode because it says something I had not articulated when I started the project. PhytoNote came out of my own pain as a PhD student facing a European reviewer, that part is true. But the app serves just as much, maybe more, a Master's student in Tétouan who wants to publish her first study cleanly, without a budget, without an institutional LIMS, without a paid electronic lab notebook subscription.

Four hours is the price of a paper accepted with minor revisions instead of having to account for missing standards.
